A new Dairy Queen is officially coming to Sherwood.

On Monday night, the city approved a plan to build the new restaurant using metal siding. The city's engineer says people are very excited for the return of Dairy Queen to the area.

“People are excited. I think they will enjoy Dairy Queen in the area...I know I will.”

The new Sherwood location isn't the only new Dairy Queen coming to central Arkansas. Another is expected to open in the area in the next six months.

Only female mosquitoes "bite" because they require blood to produce eggs. Male mosquitoes subsist on nectar. Therefore, it is the female mosquitoes that carry infectious diseases such as arboviruses and parasites that can cause life-threatening illnesses.

Why do I see Termite Swarms AFTER a Termite Treatment?

The term is POST-TREATMENT SWARM and this is what it means to you:

Termites may swarm several weeks after even the most thorough treatment has been rendered to your home. This should not cause undue alarm, but it would help if you understood how and why it happens.

If you look at termite advertising, you will notice that the professionals say TERMITE CONTROL rather than TERMITE EXTERMINATION.

This is done because the principles involved in eliminating termites from your home are quite unlike those used for any other insect.

Your pest control operator made a chemical barrier in the soil around your home. Its purpose is to make it impossible for termites to travel back and forth from the soil to the timbers in your home.

Termites carry moist soil to the wood to keep the moisture-sensitive WORKERS healthy. Once the treatment has been made, the termites can no longer humidify their galleries and they start to die.

The control is complete when the wood dries out to the point where the humidity is so low that termites cannot survive. In some homes this takes place rapidly and in others it may take several weeks.

ortunately, the destructive WORKERS die considerably before the nondestructive SWARMERS.

Nature has endowed the SWARMERS with the ability to withstand much drier environments than the WORKERS – this is because the SWARMERS must come out into the open to reproduce. Therefore, their bodies have been adapted so they can survive in dry atmosphere. The WORKERS, on the other hand, never come out into the open because the humidity is too low for their survival.

So, if you should have a POST-TREATMENT SWARM, don’t feel that the treatment was unsuccessful. Termite control takes a number of weeks for complete results because it is dependent upon the drying out of the wooden structures in your home.

Subterranean termites "swarm" as the weather begins to warm, usually at the beginning of spring after a rain event. Not all termite species swarm at the same time, but for a swarm to occur, the weather must be warm, often following a rain.

Why do Termites Swarm?

If swarming termites emerge from areas in and around your home, do not panic. The swarming termites will drop and die in a short period of time. You may vacuum them up or you can save some in a bag for our company to inspect. They do not eat wood, bite, or sting, they are simply a nuisance. Fortunately swarmers are not capable of constructing mud tubes or causing structural damage to wood.

Swarmers may use an existing mud tube, which workers abandoned after proper treatment, to leave the colony. Reproductives may also move through treated soil. Since reproductives move through soil very quickly, they absorb less of the termiticide than do workers which move slowly. Due to this fast movement, reproductives absorb less of the termiticide and are thus able to exit treated soil to swarm. Reproductives will die soon after they leave the soil either naturally or by the termiticide which they contacted as they moved through the soil.

This ant gets its name from the strong, rotten coconut-like smells it gives off when crushed and the fact that they commonly nest in or around houses. Native to the United States, these ants are very social, living in colonies of up to 100,000 members.

Diet: Odorous house ants like to eat dead insects and sugary sweets, especially melon.

Habitat: Typically living for several years, these ants commonly make their homes in exposed soil, under stones, logs, mulch, debris and other items. They will also nest in wall and floor cracks.

Impact: Odorous house ants do not pose a health threat, but they can contaminate food by leaving waste behind.

           Prevention:

Avoid using other individuals' combs, hats, towels, etc.

Eliminate standing water. Pests, such as ants, mosquitoes and termites, are attracted to moisture.

Keep tree branches and other plants cut back from the house. Sometimes pests use these branches to get into your home.

Make sure that there are no cracks or little openings around the bottom of your house. Sometimes pests use these to get into your home.

Make sure that firewood and building materials are not stored next to your home. Pests like to build nests in stacks of wood.
